Easy Beauty/Style Tips For Busy Moms

9 Jan

One of my favourite easy outfits: fitted striped top, good-fitting skinny jeans, and boots!

Two of my most-loved make-up items: Josie Maran tinted moisturizer and Vapour Organics multi-use blush!

I like to think that I have not lost my sense of style since becoming a mother. In fact, I feel I’ve found my personal style more over the last four and a half years since Tatum was born. But there are some days when I downright have ZERO time to put a lot of effort into my beauty routine and my outfit choices.

I feel better when I am put together, but being a mom means you don’t have a ton of time to hum and haw over what clothes you’re going to wear, and your beauty routine has probably been paired down substantially from your pre-children days. Even though your time may be limited, there are still ways to keep yourself looking polished in small amounts of time. Take a look below for my favourite easy ways to stay stylish in a matter of minutes!

Have a stash of easy-to-throw-together outfits.

My go-to style that’s comfortable and easy to throw on in a matter of seconds is normally a pair of skinny jeans, fitted t-shirt and a cardigan/blazer. I need clothing that I am able to run around after Tatum at the park and go for walks in, but I also need clothing that can look put-together if I’m headed to work at the make-up boutique or out running errands. When I’m getting ready for bed, I set out the next day’s clothes (and the accessories I will be wearing with it) so they’re ready to go first thing in the morning. In the evening I have the time to decide what I want to wear and to go through my clothing, rather than trying to do it while I have Tatum running around in the morning.

Can’t do your hair? Buns are the perfect style for moms!

I love to be able to style my hair every day, but often it does not happen for me. Many times my hair is going on day two of not being washed, and it can start looking a little sad. I recommend having a dry shampoo on hand, which takes about two seconds to sprinkle in your hair. It refreshes my hair when I haven’t had the chance to completely wash, condition, and style it. After I’ve sprinkled in and rubbed the dry shampoo through my hair, I’ll either put it into a sleek low ponytail, a low bun, or a top knot. Those styles are always very chic and can be done in a minute or two. If you’re a woman who has shorter hair, it’s normally easier to tame with a few swipes of a straightening iron or a brush.

Streamline your morning make-up routine.

Last May I did a post highlighting my favourite make-up must haves for moms. I shared my favourite products that could be used quickly and easily. No fussing! Don’t get me wrong, if I have the time to stretch out my routine I love to play around with my make-up. But in the morning when I don’t have the time or just plain don’t feel like messing around with several different products, but still want to look polished, I love to have a few staples on hand to be able to throw on in five minutes or less. Right now my favourite products for easy application are Josie Maran Tinted Moisturizer (if you need more coverage try Youngblood Liquid Mineral Foundation), Tarte EmphasEYE Eyeliner in dark brown,  Vapour Organic Multi-Use Blush in Spark (gives you a nice natural flush), Benefit They’re Real Mascara, and Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Sheer Raspberry Mauve. My make-up in the morning takes me about 5-10 minutes maximum. If you’re a fan of the natural make-up look like I am, and you can find the right products for you, your make-up routine can be condensed into a few minutes in the morning.

Depend on accessories to jazz up your outfits.

My daily outfit of jeans, fitted shirts and cardigans/blazers can get a little tired, but I mix it up each day with different accessories/shoes. A different mix of necklaces, scarves, earrings, rings, bracelets and shoes can completely change the vibe of an outfit. It’s also a relatively budget-friendly way to stay on-trend without buying big-ticket items like coats, expensive jeans, etc. Stick with your always-fashionable and chic staples and play up trends with accessories, and you’ll always have a fresh wardrobe.

What are your favourite ways to stay stylish while being a busy mom? Do you have a go-to outfit?

Moose Jaw Moms: Check out The Bebe Bump Maternity!

24 Jul

When David, Tatum and I moved back to Moose Jaw from Edmonton, I somewhat mourned the loss of having a huge selection of shopping that was only a short drive away. I resigned to the fact that I would either have to do most of my shopping online or suck it up and go to one of the generic stores like WalMart or Superstore. Imagine my surprise when someone mentioned to me that there was a really great maternity store in town that also had a great selection of toys, books, clothes (for both mom & baby), nursing gear and more!

Needless to say, I’ve been doing about 80% of my shopping for gifts and toys for any infants/toddlers/big kids or expectant mamas at The Bebe Bump (check out the Facebook page here) for about two years now. Breann Cole, the owner and operator of The Bebe Bump, has clearly worked hard to create an atmosphere where you can relax (there’s a section with toys and a TV just for your little ones to hang out and play!) and enjoy shopping for high quality and fashionable maternity clothes (without the hefty price tag), super-cute toys and pretty much anything an expectant, new, or seasoned mom (and dad) could need.

One of the things I love about Breann’s store is that you feel at home when you walk in. She’s the kind of store owner that will remember you and your kids the next time you come in. She takes the time to show you her products but still gives you room to browse and shop without feeling pressured into buying anything…although most of the time when I go in she doesn’t really have to do anything to get a sale out of me.

Beyond the great customer service and atmosphere of her store, the brands that she carries are well worth heading down to check them out. Here are some of my favourite brands she carries:

Melissa & Doug - a great line of wooden kids toys, clothes, kids luggage, and tons more. One of my all-time favourite brands. We included their wooden food play set in our most recent giveaway!

HOTmilk Lingere – a line of gorgeous maternity and post-partum lingerie and nursing bras. So pretty!

Prince Lionheart – really cool line of baby gear including potties, booster seats, Slumber Bear, bottles and a ton more.

Earth Mama Angel Baby – A beautiful line of USDA Certified Organic bath & body products including body butter (good for growing bellies!), baby wash and lotion, teas to help with the production of breast milk, and many more great gifts an expectant or new mother would love.

Usborne books – Awesome line of kids books ranging from books to read to your babies (sensory touch & feel) all the way up to children that are learning to read. Tatum has a few of the books and she really enjoys them.

Not only does she carry these great brands and many more in her store, there’s always cool hand-knit hats and baby apparel, amber & hazelwood necklaces, wraps and slings and a great array of unique gifts in every corner of her store. If you’re in Moose Jaw (or the surrounding area) you NEED to check out The Bebe Bump!

Summer Nail Polish Ideas

12 Jun

Confession: I am not a girly girl. Growing up, I always chose bugs and biker shorts over princess parties and dresses. Even with three older sisters and a very feminine mother, I tended to stay pretty tom-boyish. I’ll admit that I didn’t even learn to properly apply make-up until a few short years ago. That being said, it was strange to me that when one day came where I was feeling less than myself (boring hair, old outfit, tired mommy face), the first idea I thought up to help bring me out of my funk…was to paint my nails. Once Taylor was snug in bed for the night, I dug through some of my things and found an electric blue nail polish (go big or go home!) I had gotten for Christmas. After the paint had dried, I was not only excited to have done a better than mediocre job, but I also felt fashionable for once. Now I’m hooked.

Painting your nails can be an inexpensive, fun, easy, and quick way to not only perk up your wardrobe, but to help make you feel like yourself again. Below I have found a few cute and fun colors to bring your summer wardrobe (and maybe even your tired-mama self) to life! :)

1) Blasted Nails by Sephora OPI

I found this in Sephora the other day, and got really excited because it’s a no-effort way to make your nails look amazing. Just brush it on over any other nailpolish color and it gives a ‘blasted’ look. I chose the gold glitter, which is a great color for summer, and brushed it over a teal polish. It literally took me 10 minutes to get these funky and fun looking nails. (ps, those are not my hands…but that’s the look it gives!)

2) Vibrant & Electric Colors

I’m a really big fan of bright and flashy colors, especially during summertime. Sometimes the electric colors I use somehow have the ability to brighten my mood. Even if you’re wearing a simple black dress, using these colors will help make it pop!

3) Zoya Beach & Surf Collection

This is such a perfect collection for summer; bright, shimmery, and tropical!

So this summer, take some time for yourself! Even if you only get 10 mintues at a time, like I do, painting your nails is a great way to relax and soak up the silence :)

Beat the Heat with these Summer Wardrobe Staples for Expecting Mamas

5 Jun

Summer time is here, and we are all feeling the heat. But all of you expecting ladies are feeling the heat about a thousand times more! The heat can be downright unbearable while you’re pregnant during the summer months, and a wardrobe that can keep you looking stylish AND allow you to remain cool is essential. If you’re expecting and looking for some summer wardrobe inspiration so you’re not suffering through the heat, check out my favorite looks for pregnant women below!

You really can’t go wrong with a maxi dress for summer time, whether you’re expecting or not. The great thing about maxi dresses is that you don’t have to purchase it from a maternity store, which can mean a big price difference. This one I’ve featured has a bit of an empire waist (elasticized — a pregnant woman’s favorite word!) and can stretch as you grow. If you want to add a bit more oomph to the look you can wear a belt loosely below your belly. This is a really simple outfit to throw together and keep you looking sophisticated and feeling cool.

1. Slim Line Necklace – $5.80 Forever 21 2. Women’s Tie-Waist Tube Maxi Dress – $25.00 Old Navy 3. Locey Bracelet – $18.00 Aldo  4. Bordwlk Cognac Leather Sandals – $41.98 Steve Madden 5. AEO Braided Belt – $30.41 American Eagle

When the idea of putting on a pair of jeans sounds both painful and sweat-inducing, and you don’t feel like wearing a dress, shorts are a great way to go.  Add an airy top and some comfy sandals like these on-trend colorblock ones (your second and third trimester feet will thank you), some cute accessories and you’ve got a chic and comfortable summer look. If you want to go wild and wear wedges or even high heels like the adventurous woman in the short picture, go for it! If your feet can handle it then it’s always a fun look.

1.  Brendle sandals – $27.99 Aldo 2. Under Belly Roll Hem Maternity Shorts – $24.99 Motherhood Maternity 3. Gathered sleeveless top – $39.95 The Gap 4. Sprinkles necklace – $12.00 Aldo 5. Gold bangle set – $35.50 J.Crew

It’s hard enough to find clothing to wear day-to-day while expecting, not to mention find something more dressy to wear for an evening out or a special dinner. This would be the perfect “little black dress” to wear during a pregnancy. The waist is elasticized (that glorious word again!) to accommodate a growing belly, and the material is nice and light for warm summer evenings. Flat metallic sandals are in right now, so tired pregnant feet are not stuck with boring flip flops or shoved into dress sandals/shoes that are going to feel uncomfortable if you have a bit of swelling. Add a few pretty accessories and you’ve got a gorgeous night out look!

1. AEO Beaded Teardrop Earrings – $15.98 American Eagle 2. Bright Colored Enamel Bangle Bracelet – $59.00 Stella and Dot 3. Women’s Pintucked Dress – $25.00 Old Navy 4. Zigzag Charm Necklace – $6.80 Forever 21 5. Beaming Dusty Silver Sandals – $69.95 Steve Madden 6. Arc of Sanctuary Ring – $38.00 Ever Eden

What’s your favorite way to dress so you’re cool and chic while pregnant in the summer? — Franki

Top Make-Up Must Haves For Moms

23 May

Before I had Tatum, I used to spend a good hour on my morning routine. I had no qualms about getting up at 5:00am before work at 7:00am to get ready. I have always loved to look put together and well-groomed. Cut to me four years later, sleep-deprived for two of those years, and not enough hours in the day to complete anything. I’ve learned to streamline my routine so that I can still have that polished and put together look without having to get up frighteningly early or taking an hour or more. As moms want to look like we have it all together even when we really don’t, right?

I’ve taken notes from my own morning routine as well as other moms’ routines as to what products we use the most that makes us feel as though our look is complete and can get you out the door in no time. The beauty of these is that you can take or leave what’s essential to you — one day you might only need a sweep of mascara and some tinted lip balm, other days you might want to do every item on this list. Make your routine your own! Take a look below at my top five make-up must haves for moms, and if you have any make-up favourites share them with us in the comments!

1. Tinted Moisturizer

I know you may love your current foundation, but think about tinted moisturizer the next time you go to re-stock. It gives your skin that extra boost of moisture and nice coverage but lets your skin shine through.  I am a big fan of using make-up to enhance your features, not completely change them, and tinted moisturizer is perfect for that. Besides, you can swipe it on with your fingers for easy application (or you could use sponges/foundation brush). You can find formulations for oily, dry, with SPF and without.

If you want to splurge, try: Josie Maran Tinted Moisturizer

If you’re on a budget, try: Boots No. 7 Soft & Sheer Tinted Moisturizer

2. Under-Eye Concealer

Ever since I became a mother this has been a HUGE make-up staple for me. If I had nothing else in my make-up bag besides under-eye concealer, I would be fine. Most of the moms I know are running on little to know sleep, and dark circles can become a problem. Unfortunately as we age, our skin begins to thin and under our eyes is a common area for that to happen. Thus, dark circles. Lucky for us, there are plenty of kinds of under-eye concealer to rescue us from looking as though we’ve been up for three days straight. My favourite under-eye concealers usually multi task by incorporating a lightweight yet full-coverage formulation as well as including an anti-wrinkle serum. Takes a step out of the morning routine!

If you want to splurge, try: Jemma Kidd Wrinkle Rescue and Brightener

If you’re on a budget, try: L’Oreal Paris Visible Lift Serum Age-Reversing   Concealer

3. White/Peach Toned Eye Liner

I love this little trick for making eyes look wide awake in an instant. This is another one of my go-to products to use when operation make-myself-look-awake-when-I’ve-had-two-hours-of-sleep is in progress. Simple line your lower waterline with the eyeliner and poof! Instant awake. It’s a simple way to give yourself that wide-eyed awake look when you really just want to reach for a grande coffee.

If you want to splurge, try: BECCA Line & Define Pencil

If you’re on a budget, try: NYX Eyebrow Push-Up Bra

4. Good Mascara

Having a mascara that makes your eyelashes look long, luscious and clump-less is a must. Depending on what you want, you can get water-proof, water-resistant, tubing, lengthening, thickening, and anything else under the sun. What I go for is a mascara with a big, fat brush so I can do a few swipes and have long, thick lashes and be done. I also don’t want to be scrubbing at my eyes when I’m taking my mascara off, so one that comes off with a gentle swipe and warm water is important. Scrubbing around the eye area can cause wrinkles and we don’t want to add to that! Something I highly recommend before putting mascara on is curling your lashes. This is a really easy and fast way to make your eyes look bigger and more awake. It takes a few seconds and it makes all of the difference in the world.

If you want to splurge, try: CARGO Cosmetics Better-than-waterproof Mascara

If you’re on a budget, try: COVERGIRL LashBlash Volume Blasting Mascara

5. Creme Blush/Stain

This is one of my favourite ways to give your cheeks some colour really fast! Besides that, it’s perfect to highlight the cheekbones and give you that supermodel glowy skin that we all covet! The great thing about creme blush or stains is that you can layer it to add as much or as little colour as you want. It’s the perfect mom on the go product!

If you want to splurge, try: Tarte Natural Cheek Stain

If you’re on a budget, try: Revlon Cream Blush

6. Tinted Lip Stain/Lip Balm

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good lipstick. I feel like a nice lip colour can tie your look together. But on days where I need to swipe something on my lips without having to properly line them or worry about it rubbing off on my teeth when I have a billion other things on my mind, tinted lip stains or lip balms are a nice alternative. If I’m going for a natural look (which is pretty well most days), this is the perfect way to achieve that. Just like the creme blush, lip stains or lip balms can be layered to produce the exact amount of colour that you want. Throw it in your purse and reapply when needed. Fast and simple!

If you want to splurge, try: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment

If you’re on a budget, try:  Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm

A Special Mom-ent #7

You know you’re a mom when…

You’ve been cleaning your house, relaxing, watching and playing with the baby, and even going on a short walk around the neighborhood in your pajamas.

But you know you’re a mom and a tired one at that, when you’ve been wearing those pajamas backwards all day.
